I frequently receive news alerts with tragic stories of young skateboarders who were severely injured, or worse.  Frequently, the kids aren’t wearing any skateboard protective gear, including a skateboard helmet.

Today, I was thrilled to receive an alert that contained good news.  A 5yr old skateboarder’s head was run over by a car, but he’s fine:

Since when does a 5yr old skateboarder’s head getting run over by a car constitute good news??  Because he was wearing a skateboard helmet, and as a result, survived the incident, and is back to being a normal, rambunctious 5 year old boy.

As a father of four young kids, I know it isn’t always easy to set rules.  But, there are some that simply need to be set, without question, and without negotiation.  As far as I am concerned, wearing a helmet is one of these.  Don’t want to wear knee pads?  Well, don’t expect sympathy from me when you scrape your knee and it hurts a lot.  Don’t want to wear a helmet while you ride your bike?  No bike.  End of discussion.

Read this article, and set your rules today.  No skateboard helmet, no ride.
